In 1944, before releasing their first single,”Good Rockin’ Tonight”, Wynonie Harris recorded a cover version of Roy Brown’s original song by the same name. Both these recordings were credited with helping to spread rock and roll music among black and white audiences alike.
It wasn’t until 1955 that rockabilly singer Bill Haley scored a major hit with his song “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock”. This event is often considered to be the beginning of rock and roll as a mainstream genre. From here, various subgenres began to develop, including surf rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, etc.
