The 90s alternative rock bands
The 90s was a decade of alternative rock bands that broke into the mainstream. Some of the most popular and iconic alternative rock bands of the 90s include Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots. These bands defined the sound and style of alternative rock for the decade and continue to influence musicians today.
Nirvana was one of the most successful and influential alternative rock bands of the 90s. Formed in 1987 by singer-songwriter Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, Nirvana released their debut album Bleach in 1989. But it was their second album Nevermind, released in 1991, that made them superstars. Nevermind featured the massive hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, which became an anthem for disaffected youth all over the world. The band’s third album In Utero, released in 1993, cemented Nirvana’s place as one of the greatest rock bands of all time before Cobain tragically took his own life later that year.
Pearl Jam is another hugely successful and influential alternative rock band from the 90s. Formed in 1990 by members Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron (who would later join Nirvana), Pearl Jam rose to fame with their debut album Ten in 1991. Ten features hits like “Alive”, “Even Flow”, and “Jeremy” which helped propel Pearl Jam to superstardom in the early 90s grunge scene. The band has continued to make music throughout the years and are still touring today.
Soundgarden is a Seattle-based alternative rock band who were also very successful during the 90s grunge era. Formed in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil, Soundgarden released their debut album Ultramega OK in 1988 to critical acclaim but it was their second album Louder Than Love that brought them commercial success. Released in 1989, Louder Than Love featured hits like “Hands All Over” and “Rusty Cage”. After taking a break during much ofthe 1990s due to tensions withinthe band), Soundgarden reunitedin 2010and have been active ever since releasing new musicand touring internationallyto this day .
Alice In Chains is another seminal Alternative Rockband from Seattle who found success inthe early90s grunge scene . The 1990s were a decade of great alternative music. From grunge to Britpop, there were so many great bands and songs that defined the era. However, there are also plenty of forgotten 90s alt tunes that deserve to be remembered. Here are just a few of the best ones:

2. “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot – This song is sexist, objectifying women, and just overall crude.
3. “Who Let the Dogs Out?” by Baha Men – This song is annoying, repetitive, and just plain terrible.
4. “Macarena” by Los Del Rio – This song is catchy, sure, but it’s also really annoying and overplayed.
5. “Barbie Girl” by Aqua – This song is creepy, sexualizing children’s toys, and sending a bad message to young girls everywhere.
